Acupuncture for Migraine Headaches

Migraine Headaches

Everyone should get acupuncture for migraine headaches. So many people suffer from the pain of migraines. Whether they are experienced frequently or just occasionally, the symptoms can be debilitating, stopping people from working, eating, or even standing up. Migraine symptoms vary from person to person, from light sensitivity to nausea. One this is certain, they are never a pleasant experience! The pain that headache and migraine sufferers endure can impact every aspect of their lives. Acupuncture can offer powerful relief without the side effects that prescription and over-the-counter drugs can cause.

At the AHC clinic, we’ve been treating chronic headaches and migraines for many years. Here’s some of the science behind how acupuncture can ease migraine pain.

Here is how it works

Acupuncture naturally rearranges the levels of your body’s chemicals. It brings about many biochemical changes in the blood serum to stabilize serotonin, considered low in migraine sufferers. It then releases endorphins (the brain’s natural painkillers) and promotes cerebral circulation, allowing the afflicted region to obtain the sufficient blood supply, oxygen and nutrition it needs. Finally, acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system to decrease stress, muscle tension, anxiety and irritability: therefore preventing recurrence.

That being said, not every migraine or headache is the same. The most successful way to treat headaches is to find the underlying cause. Where the headache presents itself tells us a lot about why its happening and gives a clear picture of how to treat it. Some common reasons for migraines and headaches include imbalanced hormones, low blood pressure and chronic neck and shoulder tension.

Before you come in and we start a treatment plan you can do one thing today to help with a headache.

Drink water!

One thing you need to ask yourself when you experience frequent headaches is, are you properly hydrated? Drinking enough water is very important to help prevent headaches. However don’t go crazy, some headache sufferers want relief so badly that they tend to over drink water. This can be an issue because it can create an electrolyte imbalance flushing out all the important minerals that are needed to truly keep your body hydrated.
