Menopause isn’t just an ending — it’s a powerful transition. Here’s how acupuncture and herbal medicine can help make it smoother.
Lately, it seems like talk of perimenopause and menopause is everywhere — in the news, on podcasts, even at my husband’s tech job. (They recently had a webinar on menopause in the workplace… which felt a bit surreal. He works with software, not ovaries!)
Menopause is one of the big transitions in life — right up there with puberty, adulthood, and for many, pregnancy or parenting. It’s not just the end of one chapter, but the start of another. The closing of the gate of youth, and hopefully, the opening to a slower, wiser way of living.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we see this as a natural process of transformation — something to be supported, not battled. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, and nutritional support can help smooth this transition, addressing not only the physical symptoms but also the emotional and energetic shifts that come with it.
Finding Balance Again
Physically, menopause can bring a whole host of challenges: hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, headaches, joint pain, palpitations — the list goes on. It can feel like the river of your life is running low, revealing all the debris that’s been sitting quietly underneath. Old habits, unhelpful patterns, and stressors often make themselves known during this time.
This is an opportunity to pause and ask: What’s no longer serving me?
Maybe it’s time to eat in a way that truly nourishes you, move in a way that feels kind to your body, or simply allow yourself to slow down. It’s not always easy, but your body is asking for balance and care — and this is the perfect time to listen.
From a TCM perspective, this stage of life is often associated with a natural decline in Kidney Yin and Essence, which can lead to the rising of Heat — showing up as hot flashes, night sweats, and restlessness. At the same time, Liver Qi can become constrained from years of stress and overwork, contributing to mood swings, tension, and disrupted sleep.
Supporting this transition can be surprisingly simple and practical: prioritize warm, cooked foods over raw or cold meals to protect digestion; include mineral-rich and Yin-nourishing foods like black sesame, leafy greens, bone broth, and berries; reduce stimulants like caffeine and alcohol that can aggravate internal heat; and build in small daily habits that regulate the nervous system — even short walks, breathing exercises, or brief “exercise snacks” can make a meaningful difference in blood sugar balance and stress resilience.
When combined with individualized acupuncture and herbal formulas, these small shifts help anchor the body, conserve energy, and restore a sense of internal stability during a time that can otherwise feel unpredictable.
Emotional and Energetic Shifts
Mood changes, lower energy, and dips in libido can all shift how we relate to ourselves and others. Acupuncture helps regulate the nervous system, calm irritability, and improve sleep, while herbs and supplements can support your hormonal balance, energy, and mood from the inside out.
The goal isn’t to fight the changes, but to move through them with grace and steadiness. With the right support — acupuncture to keep your energy flowing smoothly, herbal formulas to restore internal harmony, and simple lifestyle adjustments — you can navigate this transition with more ease.
Menopause doesn’t have to be something to “get through.” It’s a passage — and on the other side is a wiser, stronger version of you.
If you’d like a little extra support along the way, I’d love to help you find balance again with acupuncture and herbal care.
