Supplementation for Fertility

When looking to become pregnant one of the most important factors to look at is egg quality.  Numerous tests have been done in labs for the past 10-20 years which have narrowed down which supplements have the biggest impact on egg quality and quantity in regards to ovarian reserve and IVF follicle numbers. It is one of the simplest ways that you can increase the quality of your eggs.
The research has also shown that what is beneficial to one woman is not beneficial to all women. So customizing your supplement regime to reflect that is important. Below are 3 categories of supplements for women trying to conceive.

In General

All women should be taking a good quality pre-natal supplement. This does not mean Materna, Jamieson, Centrum or Kirkland brand. They are like the fast food of vitamins. It is worth it to invest in a high quality  brand. I like Metagenics, Thorne, New Chapter Organics and  Baby and Me. You could also visit a quality health food store and they may be able to steer you towards  other good brands. The point is spend a bit more and get a quality product.

For women going through IVF

Melatonin- 3 mg taken at night
Vitamin C 500 mg
Co Enzyme Q10- 400-600 mg /day
Vitamin E 200 UI/day
N-Acetyl Cysteine 600 mg /day- be careful if you have thyroid issues or diabetes.
Folic Acid 400 mg – look for micronized
DHEA- 25mg 3x/day- this is especially true if you are nearer to 40 and/or have had a previous cycle with a poor response.

For women looking to become pregnant naturally

Folic Acid- careful not to exceed your daily dose of around 400-600. Often your multi vitamin will have some already. There is no need to hyper does on this.
CoEnzyme Q10- 400-600/day. Studies show this helps with improving egg quality by improving the quality of the mitochondria in gametes thereby improving RNA and DNA transcription.
Vitamin E 400 IU/day
Vitamin C 500 mg/day
DHEA- 25 mg /day- I have read conflicting studies about this therefore it is prudent to keep the dose low. Small amounts can still have benefit while not causing unwanted side effects.

PCOS

Good Quality Multivitamin
N-Acetyl Choline 600mg/day. Double if you are using clomid
Vit D 2000mg/day
Myo-Inositol 4 gr/day
